FAQs

WHAT ARE HIGHLIGHTS?

Hair highlights, and lowlights, change your hair color by using lightener haircolor to color hair strands. There are four basic types of highlights: foil highlights, hair painting, frosting, and chunking. Highlights can be done in natural or unnatural colors. Color highlights come in four categories: temporary, semi-permanent, demi-permanent, and permanent. Hair lightened with bleach or permanent color will be permanent until new-growth begins to emerge. Highlighted hair will make the hair appear fuller. So, it’s recommended on people with thin and fine hair. It’s also recommended for people with at least 50 % grey for easy blending, and to diminish the line of demarcation once new-growth emerges.

DOES YOUR SALON USE FOILS OR PLASTIC WRAP?

Foils for short above-shoulder and mid below-shoulder length hair. Clear plastic wrap for longer length hair. Cap for very short cropped hair.

WHAT’S A KEY CONSIDERATION FOR HIGHLIGHTS DONE IN YOUR SALON?

#1: Framing your face. Placement is key. The brightest, fattest highlights around the frame of your face. Darker sparser highlights at the root, lighter at the tips. And sombré, the more subtle ombré, inspired by the way the sun would naturally lighten your hair.

WHAT’S ANOTHER KEY CONSIDERATION FOR HIGHLIGHTS DONE IN YOUR SALON?

#2: Depth and dimension. Over-highlighted hair registers to viewers’ eyes as one color, and a flat look. Instead, our highlights vary in size and lightness, and accent your base color; they don’t overpower it. Highlights which match your hair’s tone: warm highlights as a complement if you have a warm base, cool sandy/beige highlights as a complement if you have a cool base, and either warm or cool highlights as a complement if you have a neutral base.

HOW ABOUT COLOR VARIATION?

Also very important. Too much color variation looks unnatural. So, we recommend keeping it to three at most: a base, a highlight, a lowlight. Any more makes your hair look like the hair of a Rainbow Troll.

SO, WHAT’S TOO MUCH OR TOOLITTLE WHEN IT COMES TO HIGHLIGHTS?

We strive for just right highlights. Not too light, like trying to match your skin tone. Doing so only gives you a washed-out look. We recommend a contrast between your skin tone and your hair color. However, not too much contrast either. Highlights no more than 3 levels lighter than your base color, or else you’ll wind up with a stripe-y or brass-y look.

WHAT ADJUSTMENTS DO YOU MAKE FOR SEASONS?

We recommend brighter and paler highlights in Summer, when natural light is more yellow. Deeper and more golden highlights in Winter, when natural light is more blue.

HOW MUCH DO HIGHLIGHTS COST IN YOUR SALON?

That depends on the length of your hair (short, medium, long), type of hair (curly, wavy, straight), hair texture (fine, medium, thick), and desired results. Our prices range from $165 – $225 for full-head highlights, and $95 – $125 for half-head highlights.

HOW LONG DO HIGHLIGHTS FROM YOUR SALON LAST?

Typically, most of our clients find that they need to have their highlights retouched every 6 – 8 weeks. Since hair tends to grow an average of ½-inch per month, at the end of eight weeks most people will have an average area of 1-inch at the scalp where the natural color is present before the previous highlighted color appears.

HOW LONG DOES THE PROCESS TAKE?

Typically, around 90 minutes.

Is the salon safe?

Due to COVID-19 guidelines and regulations we have established some new protocols:

The salon has been deeply cleaned and sanitized thoroughly. Client towels, gowns, and capes will be discarded after each client. We have installed customized dividers between stations as well as the sinks in the back. We have relocated our waiting area outside of the salon and will have our receptionist bring you inside for your appointment to ensure enough time for each station to be wiped down and prepared for your service. We kindly ask all our clients to wear a mask throughout their visit.
